Rancho Cotate Girls' Basketball Playoffs Hopes on Line this Week

Rancho Cotate sports roundup.

Rancho Cotate High's girls can assure themselves a shot at the North Coast Section Division II basketball playoffs by finishing the season with two wins.

The Cougars can qualify for the 16-team D-II tournament by finishing with a winning record in the North Bay League. They are 4-5 as they prepare to visit Elsie Allen (2-10 NBL, 2-20 overall) Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. The real test comes Thursday when they host first-place Montgomery (10-2 NBL, 19-5 overall.)

Rancho Cotate is 9-14 overall, so even two wins with an upset of Montgomery can't qualify by the Cougars for the playoffs by virtue of having a winning overall record.

The North Coast Section rules dictate that playoff qualifiers must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Team will have compiled a winning overall record.
  • Team will have a winning record against teams in their own division.
  • Team will have a winning record in league play.
  • League champions gain automatic entry to the playoffs.

The Cougars can't qualify by virtue of a winning record against other Division II teams. Rancho Cotate is 2-5 against other North Coast Section D-II teams, defeating Ukiah twice in NBL play.
