Sonoma Co. Slope Protection To Prevent Big-Rigs, Large RVs On Hwy 128 Stretch

Starting today, big rigs and large recreational vehicles will be restricted from traveling on part of State Route 128 in northern Sonoma County because of a slope protection projects, Caltrans said.

The restriction is necessary due to temporary one-way traffic control at a hairpin curve. The width of Route 128 will be temporarily reduced at the hairpin curve, Caltrans said.

The restriction is in effect on Route 128 between State Route 253 and the three-way intersection of North Cloverdale Boulevard/North Redwood Highway/Oat Valley Road. The slope protection project is two miles west of the three-way intersection and 1.8 miles east of the Mendocino County line.

Motorists should expect delays when traveling through the construction zone.

The segment of Route 128 between North Cloverdale Boulevard and State Route 253 will be closed to big rigs with a king pin to rear axle length longer than 30 feet. Recreational vehicles and buses longer than 40 feet also will be restricted from the construction zone. Drivers are urged to use a detour route.

The restriction does not apply to logging trucks with a trailer swivel. Big rigs and large recreational vehicles will be detoured to State Route 23.

The detour adds approximately 16 miles and 20 minutes of additional travel time, Caltrans said. The restriction is expected to be in effect for two months or less, depending on the weather, Caltrans said.
