Sonoma County Warehouse, Storage Shed Destroyed By Fire

SONOMA COUNTY, CA -- A fire destroyed a storage shed and an adjacent furniture storage warehouse in the Railroad Square area of Santa Rosa early the morning of Dec. 14, a fire battalion chief said.

Firefighters found more than half of the 4,000-square-foot storage shed burning in the rear of the property when they arrived at 737 Wilson St. around 2:15 a.m., Fire Battalion Chief Mark Basque said.

An adjacent all-wood warehouse with no built-in fire protection and two moving vans parked between the two structures quickly caught fire, Basque said.

Harry's Second-Hand Antiques Warehouse, a long-standing used furniture and antique business, used the warehouse for storage, Basque said.

Sixteen engines and three ladder trucks responded to the scene, fire officials say, including firefighters from Rincon Valley, Sebastopol, Windsor, Cal Fire and Bennett Valley. The firefighters were able to control the blaze in under two hours, but both structures and their contents were destroyed, Basque said.

Crews got the fire under control around 3:50 am, and firefighters prevented the flames from burning another structure, a warehouse associated with the Copperfield's Books chain that's attached by a noncombustible wall.

That warehouse, located at the corner of Wilson Street and West Eighth Street, sustained light smoke damage and remains open for business, Basque said.

The fire caused structural and content damage estimated at $450,000, and the cause is under investigation, Basque said.
