Her grieving family says the system failed to protect her and is now planning a memorial service while also seeking a loving Sacramento-area home for her two beloved dogs.
   

2. One person dies, two others injured after minivan veers off Sacramento freeway (sacbee.com) — A woman died and two passengers were seriously injured when a white minivan veered off Sacramento's Capital City Freeway near Del Paso Regional Park, broke through a fence onto Longview Drive, and hit a tree by the Sacramento Softball Complex. The crash happened around 4 p.m. Wednesday, and officials will release the victim's identity after family notification.
   

3. Sacramento school board approves budget plan to address deficit and avoid state takeover (kcra.com) — Sacramento City Unified's school board has approved a multi-year budget plan designed to erase a massive deficit and avoid a state takeover, aiming for a small surplus by 2026–27. The plan leans heavily on state funds and new agreements with the teachers union, but county education officials still must review it and ongoing reserve shortfalls remain a serious concern.
   

4. Sacramento chef forages wild ingredients from Mendocino forests for unique dishes (kcra.com) — A Sacramento chef is drawing on Mendocino's forests to bring rare mushrooms, huckleberries, and other wild ingredients back to his restaurant kitchen, where they're featured in dishes for local diners. His monthly foraging trips, including early-morning hikes among redwoods, supply Mulvaney's B&L with prized chanterelles and lobster mushrooms that are nearly impossible to cultivate commercially.
   

5. Governor Newsom announces appointments 9.10.26 (ca.gov) — Several Sacramento residents have been tapped by Governor Newsom for high-level roles at the California Business and Consumer Services Agency, influencing statewide consumer and business policy from the capital. These appointments, which do not require Senate confirmation, include senior leadership and advisory positions with six-figure salaries and reflect a mix of legal, policy, and industry experience.
