1. Newsom signs Ashby's SB 802 on Sacramento homelessness (elkgrovenews.net) — Sacramento-area residents will see their local governments more tightly linked on homelessness after Gov. Gavin Newsom signed SB 802, requiring Sacramento County and its cities to form a regional housing and homelessness authority by 2028. The law pushes Sacramento, Elk Grove, Rancho Cordova, Citrus Heights and Folsom to coordinate planning and accountability while still controlling their own funding and programs, potentially reshaping how services reach unhoused people countywide.
   

2. Watch: Circa Survive perform live for the first time since 2022 (lambgoat.com) — Circa Survive has reunited and is back on the road, and Sacramento is on their short list of announced dates. After a hometown comeback show in Philadelphia, the band will hit the Aftershock festival here on October 3, giving local fans a rare chance to see deep-cut favorites live for the first time in years.
   

3. Sac State coach Alonzo Carter praises team's fight despite loss to North Dakota State (fox40.com) — Sacramento State football fans just watched the Hornets battle back in a tough 31-10 loss to North Dakota State, and Coach Alonzo Carter says he's proud of their fight despite early mistakes. He highlighted quarterback Jackson Sharman's toughness and stressed cleaning up turnovers and penalties as Sac State prepares to host UMass on Sept. 26 in its first home Mid-American Conference game.
   

4. Galt police take to the skies with new drone program (lodinews.com) — A new drone-as-first-responder program in nearby Galt will be able to link directly with the Sacramento Police Department and Sacramento County Sheriff's Office when emergencies cross city lines. The $1.5 million system aims to speed responses, improve officer safety, and manage resources, while raising fresh questions about privacy and how aerial footage will be used.
   

5. Massive Humpback Whale Seen Swimming in the Sacramento River, 60 Miles From the Ocean (activenorcal.com) — Anglers on the Sacramento River near Rio Vista recently spotted a massive humpback whale surfacing about 60 miles from the Pacific, drawing regional attention and comparisons to past Delta whale visitors. Marine Mammal Center experts, who have tracked this individual for decades, are monitoring its condition while urging anyone on the water between Rio Vista and Sacramento to keep their distance and let it find its way back to sea.
