Here are the top five stories in Sacramento today:
- The Sacramento Unified School District bargaining team met with the Sacramento City Teachers Association Friday to find an agreement that works for both sides that would decide how to make up for lost instructional time due to an eight-day strike that ended at the beginning of April. According to a Sacramento City Teachers Association (SCTA) spokesperson, the two sides agree that the agreement must make up for any learning loss and must prevent any loss of state funds. However, the spokesperson told CBS13 that SCTA would not comment on the proposal because negotiations are ongoing. They want to ensure a “free exchange” at the bargaining table. (Good Day Sacramento)
- Sacramento is one of four communities in which the Governor’s 100-Day Challenge on Encampments took place. So far 109 people have been housed and another 229 have been put on the pathway to housing across these four communities. The four communities that the program took place in were Sacramento, Merced, San Bernadino, and Santa Cruz. In Sacramento, 49 people received intensive case management and are working towards establishing stable housing. Four people have already been housed with another 12 on the pathway to housing. Now that the 100 days are complete, agencies have moved on to the sustaining phase of the challenge where they are working to implement innovations that were pioneered during the challenge and continue serving people experiencing homelessness with greater efficiency. - Last week's freezing temperatures have devastated some of the Sacramento region's wine grapes. Stuart Spencer, the Executive Director of the Lodi Winegrape Commission said a number of wine grape growers he has heard from have been impacted. "The areas affected are the Thornton area, Clarksburg, up off of Grant Line Road and across the east side of Lodi," Spencer said. Bruce Blodgett, who is the executive director of the San Joaquin Farm Bureau, told KCRA 3 over Zoom that the total loss is unclear, but if the majority of San Joaquin county grape growers have been impacted, the county may file an emergency with the state. Adding the low crop yields to the already elevated prices of the glass and corks due to the supply chain issues, 2022 wines could see a jump in price. (KCRA3)
- Councilperson Siri Pulipati presented the Soroptimist Int’l of Rancho Cordova & Gold River club with a proclamation honoring Women’s History Month. The proclamation celebrated the club’s accomplishments helping the community’s at-risk women and students over its nearly 13-year history. Since the Rancho Cordova/Gold River club’s founding in 2009, members have helped over 1,800 Folsom Cordova Unified School District students, provided Comfort Kits to over 1,300 domestic violence survivors, presented college scholarships to 21 single mothers, and it was announced at the meeting that they have started a human trafficking awareness and education program. - A two-vehicle accident on Highway 50 near 15th Street caused traffic delays in Sacramento Friday night. All lanes were closed briefly due to truck overturning. Cameras from Caltrans showed a massive backup in the area. By 11:05 p.m., two lanes were opened after crews responded to the scene to tow the truck away. No injuries were reported. (KCRA3)

- For a dozen years, Sacramento Chef and Restaurateur Patrick Mulvaney and the de Vere’s brothers have staged a friendly yearly rivalry on social media, as they drum up publicity for their annual St. Baldrick’s event. The St. Baldrick’s Foundation raises money for childhood cancer research and holds events all across the nation. People volunteer to shave their heads and raise donations in the process. This last autumn, de Vere’s announced impacts of the pandemic would force its two locations – in Sacramento and Davis – to close. For this year’s St. Baldrick’s event – on Monday, April 25 - de Vere’s is returning to team up with Mulvaney. From 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. this Monday, April 25, the St. Baldrick’s event will take place in the block in front of Mulvaney’s restaurant, located at 19th and L streets in Sacramento.
