SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA — As the weekend wraps up, we've rounded up the stories you may have missed Saturday and Sunday to prepare you for Monday.

But before we jump into Southern California's top stories, residents should know that gusty winds are expected this week in the deserts and mountains, and below-average temperatures will prevail across the Southland for the early part of the week.

"Marine layer low clouds are expected to redevelop tonight, with more widespread coverage into the valleys expected," NWS San Diego forecasters wrote Sunday. "Periods of gusty westerly winds are expected in the mountains and deserts each afternoon and evening through Wednesday. Below-average temperatures are expected early this week. Gusty north to northeast winds and gradually warming weather looks likely for Thursday through Sunday."

In other news, offshore recovery assets put in place to deal with an oil sheen off the coast of Huntington Beach are being demobilized after a flyover did not observe any sheen. Shoreline cleanup teams continue to observe tar balls along the beaches, however, and at least two birds have died, authorities said.

A mountain lion was killed after being struck by a vehicle in northern San Diego County, authorities said.
