Some of the best places to celebrate Halloween are here in California, according to a new report by the personal finance website WalletHub.

CALIFORNIA — Halloween is around the corner, and some of the best places to celebrate the spooky holiday are right here in California, according to a new report by WalletHub.

To help people decide where to spend Halloween without frightening their wallet, the personal finance website compared the 100 largest U.S. cities based on 21 key metrics of Halloween friendliness, ranging from the number of Halloween stores per capita to the number of potential trick-or-treating spots.

New York City ranked as the best place to be on Halloween in the country, according to WalletHub, followed by Los Angeles and Boston. The Big Apple also finished in the top spot for most costume and candy stores per capita.

Four California cities ranked among the top 10 best places in the country to celebrate Halloween. After Los Angeles at second, San Diego ranked fourth, San Francisco ranked ninth, and San Jose ranked 10th.

Birmingham, Alabama, came in last in the rankings, with Memphis, Tennessee, and Baton Rouge, Louisiana, rounding out the bottom three.

The average household in the U.S. is projected to spend $86.27 on Halloween related expenses in 2019, according to the National Retail Federation. That comes to an incredible $8.8 billion in total, which is the third highest amount in the past 15 years.
