SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA — As we head into the new week, we've rounded up the stories you may have missed Saturday and Sunday to prepare you for Monday.

But before we jump into Southern California's top stories, residents should expect a gradual cooling trend after a stretch of very hot conditions, according to the National Weather Service.

"Low pressure over the western states will bring a gradual cooling trend through Wednesday with high temperatures cooling to as much as 5 to 10 degrees below average for the Inland Empire," NWS San Diego forecasters wrote Monday.

"Night and morning coastal low clouds will increase in coverage and spread farther into the western valleys for early Tuesday and early Wednesday as the marine layer slowly deepens. This will be followed by a gradual warming trend for Thursday into next weekend."

In other news, a deputy was seriously injured in a suspected DUI hit-and-run crash; a man was arrested on suspicion of killing his 74-year-old mother; a man was killed in a scuffle with a security guard; two people were killed in a fiery McLaren crash; and two people were shot while sitting in a parked vehicle.

Plus, the U.S. Department of Agriculture is providing $4 million in emergency funding to help California fight the spread of the invasive glassy-winged sharpshooter, which threatens the state's agriculture industry.
