ATM Blown Up In San Diego Bank Robbery

BREAKING: The FBI released surveillance photographs Thursday of two men suspected of blowing up an ATM and stealing its cash box Sunday.

SAN DIEGO, CA – The FBI released surveillance photographs Thursday of two men suspected of blowing up an ATM and stealing its cash box last Sunday. The duo unsuccessfully attempted a similar robbery in July, according to authorities.

The suspects first attempted to blow up an ATM on July 4 outside Cal Coast Credit Union on Ruffin Road in San Diego, according to FBI Special Agent Sarah Lawand and Special Agent Matt Beals from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. The suspects used a pipe bomb that damaged the ATM, broke a glass pane, and then fled southbound on Ruffin Road in an unidentified dark colored vehicle. They did not take any money.

Weeks later, on Sunday, Aug. 13, the suspects robbed an ATM by blowing up the machine at the Chevron station on Miramar Road in San Diego, Lawand and Beals said in a joint statement. One of the suspects drilled a hole into the ATM and filled it with gasoline. The second suspect placed a fuse into the ATM and detonated the machine. The suspects stole an undisclosed amount of cash and fled eastbound on Miramar Road in a 2000 to 2006 dark colored Ford Escape with after market wheels, a tow hitch with ball and "cold" license plates.
