1. 5 San Diego County Students Awarded Sustainability Scholarships (patch.com) — Five San Diego County graduates, including students from San Diego, El Cajon and Coronado, have each received $1,000 sustainability scholarships from Wheelhouse Credit Union. With several recipients heading to UC San Diego and the University of San Diego, the program underscores growing local support for environmental leadership and has now provided $147,000 in scholarships to area students.
   

2. San Diego has avoided rotating outages since 2022 — battery storage is why (10news.com) — San Diego's growing network of large battery storage facilities is helping keep local lights and air conditioners on during extreme heat, preventing rotating outages even as the state leans more on renewable energy. SDG&E now controls or accesses 1,350 megawatts of battery capacity in the county, which kicks in during peak demand so residents haven't been asked to conserve power since 2022.
   

3. Breaking: Fa/drd Fire reported in San Diego County on Sep. 11 (sacbee.com) — A new wildfire named the Fa/drd Fire was reported Friday afternoon on private land in San Diego County, and officials have not yet released any details on containment or cause. If you live nearby, stay alert for updates from fire authorities and be prepared for possible smoke, changing conditions, or evacuation guidance.
   

4. San Diego International Film Festival Announces 25th Anniversary Lineup (broadwayworld.com) — San Diego film lovers can look forward to the 25th San Diego International Film Festival, running six days in October with premieres, galas, and a robust shorts program. Events span La Jolla venues like The Conrad and THE LOT, with many films labeled San Diego premieres and several locally focused shorts, giving residents plenty of chances to see new work first.
   

5. San Diego immigration judges shift to virtual detention center cases, sparking concern (nbcsandiego.com) — San Diego immigration judges are shifting many local cases to one judge while others handle virtual hearings for detention centers nationwide, raising concerns about longer delays and due process for immigrants here. Former Judge Meghan Heesch and court observers warn residents with cases to check the federal hotline or website frequently, as hearings are being pushed months into the future.
