SAN DIEGO, CA — As we head into the new work week, we've rounded up the stories you may have missed Saturday through Monday to prepare you for the week ahead.

But before we jump into Southern California's top stories, residents should expect record-breaking temperatures as a heat wave descends on the region.

"High pressure off the coast will continue to pass over the region and strengthen through the week, bringing a long-duration and early season heat wave," NWS San Diego forecasters wrote Sunday.

"This heat event will encompass temperatures up to 30 degrees above normal for this time of year, leading to moderate to high heat risk and record breaking temperatures. The area of high pressure will begin to weaken by next weekend, allowing for a gradual cooling trend."

In other news, a 15-year-old boy was shot and wounded during a fight; a body was found inside a home following a welfare check that led to a seven-hour barricade; a mother and son were killed in an apparent murder-suicide; a stabbing victim was found during a routine traffic stop; two people were wounded in a pier shooting; and a black bear made an unscheduled appearance on live television.

Also, Cal/OSHA urged employers across California to take steps to prevent heat illness as a heat wave pushes temperatures above seasonal averages this week.

Plus, the Trump administration invoked emergency powers under the Defense Production Act, ordering the restart of the Santa Ynez offshore oil platform and pipeline along the Santa Barbara County coast that was shuttered after a spill released thousands of barrels of crude into the Pacific 11 years ago.
