Caltrans Worker Killed In Fall From San Diego Freeway Overpass

SAN DIEGO, CA – A 57-year-old Caltrans maintenance worker died Wednesday in a fall from a Kearny Mesa freeway overpass.

William Casdorph of Chula Vista was with a crew doing landscaping and street-sweeping work when he plunged roughly 50 feet off the state Route 163 bridge over Interstate 805 about 3 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

Medics took Casdorph to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The cause of the accident was under investigation.

Gov. Jerry Brown praised Casdorph as a "dedicated public servant who worked to make our roads safer for nearly two decades."

"On behalf of all Californians, we extend our deep condolences to his family, friends and the Caltrans community as they struggle to cope with this sudden loss," Brown said.

Casdorph, who is survived by his wife and three adult daughters, was the 189th Caltrans employee to lose his life on the job, according to the governor's office.

Flags at the state Capitol will be lowered to half-staff in his honor.
