Personal data for more than 500,000 individuals may have been compromised in a data breach at San Diego Unified School District.

SAN DIEGO, CA – A data breach was reported Friday at San Diego's largest school district.
Personal data – including Social Security numbers, names, addresses and staff payroll information – for more than 500,000 individuals may have been compromised in a data breach at San Diego Unified School District.
"We sincerely regret that, after completing a thorough forensics investigation, we have reason to believe personal data may have been compromised through the access or use by an unauthorized individual," officials said in an announcement on the district website.

"The unauthorized access resulted in the potential viewing of the personal data of some students and staff members. The personal data potentially included social security numbers and other personal identifying information."
The viewing or copying of some personal data was possible or occurred between January 2018 and Nov. 1, 2018, according to the district. Staff became aware of the issue in October 2018.

All students and staff who had their information accessed have been alerted by district staff, according to district officials. The district has also notified anyone potentially affected by the breach via email.
