2 Killed In Wrong-Way Crash On Interstate 5 In San Diego County

Authorities closed all southbound I-5 lanes, north of J Street, ​according to the CHP. A SigAlert was issued for the area.

CHULA VISTA, CA — Two drivers were killed in a wrong-way crash Wednesday on Interstate 5 in San Diego's South Bay.

The crash happened at about 3:23 a.m. on southbound I-5 just north of Palomar Street in Chula Vista, according to the California Highway Patrol. A 67-year-old woman from San Diego was driving a Honda Civic northbound in the southbound lanes when she crashed into a Dodge Challenger driven by a 16-year-old boy from Imperial Beach.

"As a result of the crash, the Dodge caught fire and became fully engulfed," CHP public affairs Officer Salvador Castro said. "Both drivers were trapped in their vehicles and sustained fatal injuries."

Their identities were withheld pending family notification.

A toxicology report was pending through the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office to determine whether alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash.
