Flash Flood Warning Issued For Northeastern San Diego County

The warning is in effect until 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CA – The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for northeastern San Diego County, after heavy thunderstorms started in the area. The warning is in effect until 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service, locations that will likely experience flooding include:

  • Banner
  • Borrego Palm Canyon
  • Borrego Springs
  • Highway 79 between Julian and Lake Cuyamaca
  • Highway 79 between Santa Ysabel and Warner Springs
  • Highway S22 between Ranchita and Borrego Springs
  • Julian
  • Lake Cuyamaca
  • Los Coyotes Indian Reservation
  • Ranchita
  • San Ysidro Creek
  • Santa Ysabel Indian Reservation
  • Sections of Highway 78 from the mountains to Borrego Springs
  • Shelter Valley
  • Warner Springs

Weather officials warned motorists to turn around when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.

"Remain alert for flooding even in locations not receiving rain," weather officials said. "Arroyos, streams and rivers can become raging killer currents in a matter of minutes, even from distant rainfall."

At 2:40 p.m., doppler radar indicated thunderstorms produced heavy rain across areas between Julian and Borrego Springs, with rainfall rates close to 1 inch per hour, according to the National Weather Service. Weather officials said the rain is likely causing flash flooding.

"Across areas further to the north, runoff could continue to lead to flash flooding even though the rain has ended there," weather officials said.
