High Wind Warning Extended In Parts Of San Diego County

SAN DIEGO, CA — Gusty Santa Ana winds are predicted to slam San Diego County longer than expected.

The National Weather Service extended a high wind warning until 2 p.m. Friday for the county's mountains and valleys. The warning that was slated to expire Wednesday.

Northeast winds from 20 to 30 mph are expected late Thursday afternoon into Friday morning, with gusts up to 35 to 50 mph in portions of the San Diego valleys, according to the NWS. In eastern portions of the valleys, gusts up to 60 mph are expected, especially near the mountain foothills.

Northeast winds from 30 to 50 mph are expected on the coastal slopes of the San Diego mountains, with gusts up to 65 to 75 mph, according to the NWS.

"Winds will be weaker for this evening into Thursday morning," NWS San Diego forecasters said. "Winds will begin to increase Thursday afternoon, peaking in strength Thursday night into Friday morning."

Forecasters warned damaging winds could blow down trees and power lines. Weather officials advised residents to avoid windows and remain in the lower levels of their home during the windstorm.

"Watch for falling debris and tree limbs," officials said. "Use caution if you must drive."
