Man Fatally Injured In Fight At Vacation Rental In San Diego

SAN DIEGO, CA — A man was fatally injured in a fight at a vacation rental over the holiday weekend in San Diego, authorities said.

Police received a call about a man being in medical distress following a physical altercation at 2:11 a.m. Monday at a home in the 2800 block of Poinsettia Drive in the Point Loma area, according to the San Diego Police Department.

When officers arrived, the 38-year-old man was not breathing, police Lt. Daniel Meyer said. Paramedics took him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The survivor of the fight, a 44-year-old man, was detained, Meyer said.

"While it is early in the investigation, based on preliminary information, it appears the residence where this occurred is a vacation rental. A group of people from out of town were staying there," Meyer said.

"During the night, there was a physical altercation where the male who died was physically restrained by another member of the group," he added. "While being restrained, the male went into medical distress leading to the 911 call."

Detectives were investigating what led up to the altercation, the nature of the dispute and restraint, and the circumstances surrounding the death, Meyer said. The man's cause of death will be determined by the San Diego County Medical Examiner.
