SAN DIEGO, CA — A man trying to sneak hundreds of pounds of methamphetamine into the U.S. in a shipment of green onions was arrested over the weekend at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry, authorities reported Monday.
The 31-year-old Mexican citizen pulled into the inspection station about 12:30 p.m. Sunday in a tractor-trailer loaded with a shipment listed as "mint leaves and other spices," according to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
During an X-ray examination of the vehicle, agents noticed suspicious anomalies in the shipment and sent the tractor-trailer to the dock for further inspection. A canine alerted them to the shipment, which included 40 wrapped packages of meth hidden underneath the produce, customs officials said.
