SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA — As we head into the new week, we've rounded up the stories you may have missed Saturday and Sunday to prepare you for Monday.
But before we jump into Southern California's top stories, residents should know that "hazardous heat" is expected before a midweek cooling trend, according to the National Weather Service.
"High pressure will bring hazardous heat across the region through Tuesday and perhaps Wednesday," NWS Los Angeles forecasters wrote Monday. "A cooling trend will begin midweek with temperatures within a few degrees of normal by Thursday. Additionally, dense fog will be possible near the coast each night through morning."

In other news, a "hate crime-related vandalism" targeting the LGBTQ+ community in a San Diego neighborhood was under investigation, police said. The vandalism included a swastika and an anti-LGBTQ+ slur spray painted on a trash can and a wall.
A hospital is seeking to identify the family of a woman who was found injured in a Los Angeles neighborhood. She has been in the hospital since July 30.

Los Angeles sheriff's deputies shot and injured a knife-wielding man after he threatened someone near a shopping center, officials said.
The slow-moving 5,222-acre brush fire burning in a federal preserve on the southern tip of Riverside County, along the boundary with San Diego County, is 82% contained Monday, officials said. The Nixon Fire, which has destroyed 23 structures, is expected to be fully contained by Wednesday, the Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department announced.
Plus, a 3-year-old gelding died after suffering a racing injury at Del Mar, track officials confirmed. Handsome Red is the third horse to die during Del Mar's summer meet, which began July 20.
