Brush Fire Burning At 'Dangerous Rate' Forces Evacuations In Dehesa (patch.com) — Residents in eastern San Diego County are facing evacuations as the fast-moving Dehesa 7 Fire burns near Dehesa and Red Gum roads, east of El Cajon. San Diego County Sheriff's officials have ordered evacuations in multiple zones, set up a temporary evacuation point at Viejas Casino in Alpine, and closed a stretch of Dehesa Road while firefighters battle the zero-percent-contained blaze by air and ground.
   

2. Barona Powwow To Celebrate Native American Culture Over Labor Day Weekend (patch.com) — San Diego County residents are invited to the 54th annual Barona Powwow over Labor Day weekend, a free three-day celebration on the Barona Indian Reservation near Lakeside. The event will feature gourd dancing, grand entries, hundreds of dancers from across the country, hand drum contests, and Native foods and crafts, with free parking at the Barona Sports Complex.
   

3. Inmate Sentenced In San Diego County Suspected In Prison Homicide (patch.com) — San Diego County residents are learning more about a local assault convict now suspected in a deadly incident at a central California prison. State officials say Joseph L. Rountree, sentenced out of San Diego County in 2023, has been moved to restricted housing while investigators probe the death of fellow inmate Carl J. Anderson Jr.
   

4. 2 Red Octopuses Make Public Debut At Birch Aquarium (patch.com) — San Diegans can now visit Birch Aquarium at UC San Diego to see two juvenile red octopuses, among the first of their species successfully raised from hatchlings in an aquarium. The animals, now on display in the Coastal California section, showcase months of specialized care and research by the aquarium's team, who are sharing their techniques to improve understanding of this local species.
   

5. Mission Bay bathrooms set to close in December unless San Diego City Council finds more funding (10news.com) — Mission Bay's public bathrooms are only funded through December unless the San Diego City Council finds another $350,000 to close the budget gap. Councilmembers Joe La Cava and Jennifer Campbell have kicked in discretionary funds, matched by city tourism taxes, but the facilities could still shut down at year's end without a longer-term fix.
