📰 News we're reading

1. San Diego heat wave pushes SDG&E to record demand as nearly 15,000 lose power (thecooldown.com) — San Diego's recent heat wave pushed SDG&E electricity demand to a record high, causing nearly 15,000 customers to temporarily lose power and straining local infrastructure. Residents from neighborhoods like Rancho Bernardo and Poway saw unplanned outages as crews worked in extreme heat to restore service. State grid operators also faced record demand, underscoring ongoing challenges during extreme weather.

2. MTS proposes bus route cuts amid budget deficits (nbcsandiego.com) — San Diego transit riders could soon see one-third of MTS bus routes eliminated and major cuts to bus and trolley service as the agency faces projected deficits up to $150 million by 2030. Riders who depend on routes to places like SeaWorld, Cabrillo Monument, Mission Hills, and Tierrasanta may lose key connections unless new state funding or a 2028 local transit sales tax passes. Officials plan more detailed proposals later this year.

3. Waymo Opens San Diego Rides as California Robotaxi Map Grows (californianewstimes.com) — San Diego residents can now request Waymo robotaxi rides across a 50-square-mile area from the beach to I-15, including Mission Bay and downtown, though freeways and the airport aren't served yet. The rollout follows state approval over local transit agencies' objections, and the company plans gradual expansion of routes, highway access, and airport service in the coming months.

4. Christopher Garabedian Dies in San Diego Motorcycle Crash on Varona Street (pacificattorneygroup.com) — A 22-year-old motorcyclist from Sherman Oaks died after a collision Wednesday afternoon at Varona Street and Catalina Boulevard in San Diego, with emergency crews transporting him to UC San Diego Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Police and the Medical Examiner's Office are still investigating the crash's cause and have not released details about the other vehicle involved.

5. Here are the top 10 most stolen cars in Chula Vista (cbs8.com) — Car thefts are down sharply in nearby Chula Vista, but the most-stolen models still closely mirror those in San Diego, including Jeep Wranglers, Honda Civics, and Toyota Tacomas. With about 8,400 vehicles stolen countywide in 2025, experts say organized theft rings are using sophisticated tech and border access to target specific models. They urge San Diego County drivers to add visible locks, port protection, and alarms to slow thieves.
