San Diego Area Schools Earn Green Ribbon Distinction
Only 25 schools and eight districts earned 2020 California Green Ribbon Schools awards.
SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CA — Three schools and one school district in San Diego County were recently recognized as California Green Ribbon Schools.
Jefferson Elementary School in Carlsbad, Francis Parker School in San Diego, St. Martin of Tours Academy in La Mesa and San Diego Unified School District were among 25 schools and eight districts that earned 2020 California Green Ribbon Schools awards, the California Department of Education announced. The award recognizes schools and school districts for environmental excellence.
"Congratulations to the honorees," State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond said in a statement.

"California Green Ribbon Schools expertly use local approaches to tackle global issues such as sustainability and environmental literacy. Students are not only learning and practicing environmental stewardship, but also sharing those sustainable practices with their families and in their communities."
Jefferson Elementary was the only public school in the county to win the award, while Francis Parker and St. Martin of Tours Academy were the only private schools in the county to win. San Diego Unified was the only school district recognized in the county.

These were the schools and district from the county that were recognized and the awards they received:
- Jefferson Elementary, Carlsbad Unified: Gold
- Francis Parker, private school: Gold
- St. Martin of Tours Academy, private school: Gold
- San Diego Unified: Silver
