San Diego County Lowers Flags To Honor Legacy Of Civil Rights Leader Rev. Jesse Jackson

The county will also illuminate the County Administration Center in downtown San Diego in honor of the late Rev. Jesse Jackson.

SAN DIEGO, CA — San Diego County will lower flags to half-staff at county facilities and illuminate the County Administration Center in downtown San Diego Wednesday evening in honor of the late Rev. Jesse Jackson.

The lowering of flags serves as a "solemn tribute" to memorialize Jackson's contributions, while the rainbow illumination stands as a "vibrant beacon of unity" and recognizes the Rainbow PUSH Coalition he established, according to Supervisor Joel Anderson.

"Rev. Jesse Jackson was a servant leader whose tireless work illuminated paths toward justice and equality for generations," Anderson said in a statement. "His unwavering commitment to civil rights reminds us that love, solidarity, and progress know no bounds. In San Diego County, we honor his legacy by coming together in remembrance and celebration of his profound impact."

San Diego Public Advocate Shane Harris said Anderson formally accepted his request to recognize Jackson's contributions to civil rights, economic justice and voting rights.

Jackson, one of America's leading civil rights figures and a two-time presidential candidate, died Tuesday at the age of 84. He founded the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, which works to empower people through economic opportunity, peace and social justice.

Harris also said he plans to host a "San Diego Salute to Rev. Jesse Jackson" in the coming days in San Diego's Black Arts and Culture District.

"Rev. Jesse Jackson was not just a historic figure — he was a mentor, a movement leader, and a man I had the honor of marching beside and organizing alongside," Harris said. "He taught us that hope is not passive. Hope is organized. Hope shows up."
