San Diego First Responders Train For Terrorist Attack, Active Shooter Scenarios

Over 40 local agencies are set to participate in the emergency exercise – touted as the largest of its kind held in the San Diego region.

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CA – In order to practice responding to a terrorist attack, active shooter or explosive device scenario in San Diego, local firefighters, law enforcement officers and other emergency personnel will begin a two-day training exercise Wednesday.

More than 40 agencies are expected to participate in the emergency exercise, which is being promoted as the largest of its kind held in the region. Plans for the training have been in the works for more than a year, according to the county.

The first exercise session will take place at 10 a.m. at the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department Training Facility near Lindbergh Field.

First responders will work to decontaminate mock victims after the detonation of an improvised explosive device and a so-called dirty bomb. They will also practice their response to a mock active shooter scenario.

Training will continue in Carlsbad and at the Port of San Diego. County officials alerted residents that increased police and firefighter presence may be seen in the areas.

Officials also reminded residents to prepare for emergencies by visiting ReadySanDiego.org and to report suspicious activity by calling 911.
