Suspect In Shooting Of CHP Officer In San Diego Arrested

SAN DIEGO, CA — A California Highway Patrol officer is recovering Thursday after he was shot in the thigh during a dispute on Interstate 8 in Mission Valley with a 25-year-old man who was taken into custody with the assistance of a group of bystanders.

The officer responded to eastbound side of the freeway near the I-805 interchange about 6:15 p.m. Wednesday to investigate reports of a traffic collision, according to the San Diego Police Department.

During the investigation, the officer became involved in a struggle with the suspect, who allegedly produced a gun and fired a single shot at the officer, police said. Details on what led up to the altercation were not immediately available.

The officer was struck in the thigh and taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital in serious, but stable, condition, police said.

The suspect was taken into custody within minutes of the shooting, SDPD Officer Darius Jamsetjee said. His name was not immediately released.

A CHP officer at the San Diego office told City News Service the eastbound lanes of Interstate 805 remain closed and will be closed for an unknown duration. Interstate 8, which was also closed during the investigation of the shooting, reopened just before 11 p.m.
