Voters Can Still Register For March Election In San Diego County

Tuesday was the last day to register to vote for the March 3 election, but prospective voters can still sign up for a provisional ballot.

SAN DIEGO — Although Tuesday was the last day to register to vote for the March 3 election, prospective voters can still sign up for a provisional ballot.

The Conditional Voter Registration law allows voters a chance to register and cast a ballot after the registration deadline, but additional paperwork is required.

"A presidential election comes with a big voter turnout and the potential for longer lines," San Diego County Registrar Michael Vu said. "Not registered? No problem. But don't wait until Election Day when you can avoid the lines today."

Prospective voters can visit the Registrar of Voters Office at 5600 Overland Ave. to fill out paperwork for a provisional ballot. The office is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and will be open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 29 and Sunday, March 1.

On Feb. 29, the registrar will also open four satellite locations so voters can register from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. until Election Day, when the hours change to 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. The locations will be announced Feb. 25.

Additionally, potential voters can register at any polling place, but Vu urged non-registered voters to visit the registrar's office or one of the satellite locations because the registrar is more capable of processing voter registrations and can help prevent long lines and wait times.

Provisional ballots are typically verified and counted after Election Day, because election officials need to verify voter registration and confirm the individual did not vote elsewhere in the election. During the last election, conditional voting was only allowed at the registrar's office, creating hours-long lines.

Election materials are available in English, Spanish, Filipino, Vietnamese and Chinese.
