Utility crews are chipping away at lingering outages from this week's storm, but thousands were still without power Friday.

Powerful winds earlier this week knocked out power for 300,000 across the Bay Area. Many are still feeling the impact.

SAN FRANCISCO — Close to 10,000 PG&E customers are still in the dark following this week's wind-fueled atmospheric river, where gusts topped 70 mph in San Francisco and edged closer to 100 mph at higher elevations.

The utility said Friday morning that 9,711 customers were still without power, including more than 4,600 in the South Bay, nearly 3,800 on the Peninsula and more than 1,000 in the East Bay. That figure was about a quarter of the total reported Thursday afternoon and down substantially from the 300,000 impacted by outages during the peak of the storm.

PG&E said its crews continued to make progress Friday morning, working primarily in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties. Santa Clara County had more than 3,600 without power early Friday, followed by Monterey County with 2,400 customers and San Mateo County with 2,100.
