49ers Coach Recovering From Serious South Bay Car Crash

PALO ALTO, CA — San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan suffered broken ribs, a severe concussion and facial injuries requiring 40 stitches in a car crash in downtown Palo Alto last week, according to multiple reports.

The collision happened around 6 p.m. July 14 near Alma Street and Hamilton Avenue, according to the Palo Alto Police Department.

Police and firefighters responded to the scene and took one of the two drivers to a local hospital with injuries, officials said.

Police said neither driver was suspected of being impaired, both remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, and no citations were issued.

Newly released 911 dispatch audio shed more light on the severity of the collision, according to the California Post. Dispatchers reported a crash involving a black Tesla and a blue Mercedes SUV and advised responding officers that "one driver [was] bleeding from the head."

That driver was later identified as Shanahan.

ESPN reported Shanahan's injuries were serious but not life-threatening and that he is recovering at home.

After the report was published, the 49ers confirmed the accident in a statement.

"San Francisco 49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan was involved in a car accident last week where he suffered non-life-threatening injuries," the team said. "Coach Shanahan will participate in team activities on a limited basis at the start of training camp while he recovers."

The team stated assistant head coach Chris Foerster and the team's coordinators will assume Shanahan's responsibilities while he recovers.

Shanahan lives in nearby Los Altos, according to SFGATE, and is entering his 10th season as the 49ers' head coach.
