After Eagles Upset, Can The 49ers Carry Momentum And Reach The Big Game?

Only two teams have ever played the Super Bowl at their home stadium, and the SF 49ers only need two more wins to become the third.

SANTA CLARA, CA — The San Francisco 49ers were considered serious contenders to win their division and lift the Lombardi Trophy.

However, following an injury-plagued season, in which stars such as Nick Bosa and George Kittle suffered season-ending injuries, they've since become underdogs.

They upset the Eagles in a close Wild Card game on Sunday. With that win, they're now just two wins away from returning to the Super Bowl for the second time in three seasons.

First, they'll have to go through their rivals, the Seattle Seahawks, who are heavy favorites to win it all this year. If they beat the Seahawks this weekend, they'll then have to get through another favorite in the Los Angeles Rams or the resilient Chicago Bears, led by Quarterback Caleb Williams.

ESPN has listed the 49ers as having 20-to-1 odds to win Super Bowl 60, the lowest odds of any team.

But football is unique from other sports in that teams only need one win to reach the next round. And anything can happen in that one game.

The 49ers have already shown they're capable of defeating each team. They split wins with the Rams and Seahawks during the 2025 season. They also defeated the Bears in a heavy offensive matchup at Levi's Stadium.

The 49ers have also been at the top of the list with their offense, ranking No. 7 in the NFL in total yards per game and No. 5 in passing yards. But their running game has struggled, ranking No. 24 in rushing yards per game, along with a lackluster defense that has 21.8 points a game.

Seattle, meanwhile, has ranked highly defensively, allowing the least number of points per game in the NFL, with an average of 17.2. They were also top-10 in yards per game and did a great job stopping teams from employing a running game, only allowing 91.9 rushing yards per game, No. 3 overall in the league.

The 49ers will have to rely heavily on their passing game for a chance to beat the Seahawks, who also only allowed 193.9 passing yards per game this season.

Against the Rams, the 49ers would have to figure out their defensive scheme against a team that ranked No. 1 this season in total yards per game, passing yards per game and No. 7 in rushing yards per game. But the Rams' defense also struggled this year, ending up in the middle of the pack by allowing 327.5 total yards per game, including more than 200 passing yards per game.

To make it to Super Bowl 60, the 49ers will need to rely on Quarterback Brock Purdy to continue the dominance he showed in the comeback win against the Eagles.

The 49ers will take on the Seahawks away in Seattle on Saturday. Gametime is scheduled for 5 p.m.
