SAN FRANCISCO — Police in San Francisco announced the arrest of a suspect Tuesday and released more details about shootings and resulting collisions that injured two adults and two children on Sunday and sent officers scrambling to three different crime scenes.

At about 7:12 p.m., police responded to a report of a shooting that resulted in multiple vehicle collisions. Three crime scenes were located at Beach and Stockton streets and the Embarcadero at Kearny and Howard streets.

At Beach and Stockton, police received reports that occupants in a white sedan and occupants in a black SUV were exchanging gunfire as they traveled eastbound on Beach. According to police, the occupants continued to exchange gunfire as they drove through several city streets.

Unfortunately, two people who were not involved in the gunfire exchange were injured in their vehicles in the area of Beach and Stockton. A 48-year-old man sustained injuries from glass that shattered from a gunshot but is expected to survive. A 34-year-old woman was also injured when she was struck with bullet fragments and broken glass and she is also expected to survive.

The vehicles continued to travel south on the Embarcadero. When they reached Kearny, the white sedan struck a 10-year-old girl and the black SUV struck a 16-year-old child, both of whom were crossing the street, police said. The 10-year-old is expected to survive and the 16-year-old was treated at the scene.

At this point, the suspects' vehicles continued south on the Embarcadero. When they reached Howard Street, the black SUV collided with with a "fixed object" and stopped, police said. The white sedan fled the scene.

Police detained the two occupants of the black SUV, a 28-year-old woman and Lee Haywood, 33, from Pittsburg. Both had been struck by gunfire and were taken to the hospital. Haywood is currently being treated for life-threatening injuries, police said on Tuesday. The woman has been released from the hospital.

Police allege they found a semi-automatic firearm and several spent shell casings inside the SUV.
Haywood was arrested on suspicion of negligent discharge of a firearm, being a wanted felon in possession of a firearm, carrying a loaded, concealed firearm in a vehicle and on an outstanding warrant out of Antioch.

While one arrest has been made, this remains an active investigation, police said. Anyone with information is asked to call the SFPD tip line at (415) 575-4444. Callers can remain anonymous.
