Bay Area Artists May Enter Muni Contest
The winning designs will be showcased during 2020.
SAN FRANCISCO, CA —Bay Area artists have until Friday to submit entries for the annual Muni Art Project and have their work displayed on San Francisco Municipal Railway buses. This year's theme is "Hidden Gems in San Francisco."
The contest is now in its fifth year of showcasing local artists on 100 buses -- 20 buses apiece for each artist -- that will circulate as mobile art galleries around the city for a year starting in January.
Since 2017, the project by San Francisco Beautiful has also teamed with the Poetry Society of America. The society will pre-select five poems that each Muni artist will creatively interpret. An appointed jury will choose the five winners, who will be announced Aug. 30.

"The goals of the project are to promote local artists and poets, engage the public, and enhance the daily commute for those 100,000 daily Muni riders who live, visit and do business in San Francisco," organizers said in an announcement.
Along with the five poetry panels, each artist will have three panels to reflect the 2020 theme, for a total of eight original works lining both interior display sides of the buses.
