Beloved SF Mexican Restaurant Closes: 'Right Time To Close This Chapter'
The owner said post-pandemic issues and the departure of X from their building "accelerated the challenges"the restaurant faced.
SAN FRANCISCO, CA — A popular and beloved Mexican restaurant has closed after more than four decades in San Francisco.
Cadillac Bar & Grill Owner Michael Rodriguez announced Tuesday that the restaurant was permanently closed.
"The Cadillac Bar & Grill has enjoyed an incredible run in San Francisco for nearly 30 years across its two locations," Rodriguez said in a statement on the restaurant's website and social media. "After much reflection, I’ve decided that the end of 2025 was the right time to close this chapter."

The restaurant first opened near the Moscone Center in the 1980s, "where it became a San Francisco icon for decades," Rodriguez said.
The business moved to the Mid-Market area in the mid-2010s — into the same building that once housed the social media platform X, formerly Twitter, Rodriguez said.

Through 2018, Rodriguez says the restaurant thrived. But then COVID struck and "devastated the city and its hospitality industry," Rodriguez said.
The neighborhood never fully recovered, and that, Rodriguez said, along with Musk's decision to relocate X to Texas, "accelerated the challenges" the restaurant faced, leading to its closure.
"I want to sincerely thank everyone who supported us over the decades — our loyal regulars, our guests, and all those who shared great meals and lasting memories with us,” Rodriguez said. “It has truly been an honor.”
