Curious about how to carve wax to make jewelry? In this class, you will learn the basics of carving wax, which will then be cast into metal. We will go over the different types of waxes, how to carve it using an array of tools, and how to clean and polish your cast metal jewelry. At the end of class, you will have 1-2 pieces of jewelry (within 2" x 2" x 0.25") to take home with you.
Please note, since this is a short class, and we won't be casting the waxes ourselves, but the instructor will explain the process of lost wax casting. Your carved waxes will be cast in silver, and all materials are included in tuition.
Prerequisite: None, but dexterity in your hands will help you get more out of this class. Students must be 18+ years or older at the start of class.
To bring: N95 mask, closed toe shoes, hair tie (for folks with long hair), apron, ultra fine black sharpie, safety glasses (no glasses; over glasses), sandpaper, and notebook and pen for taking notes
Instructor bio
Olivia Shih is a jewelry artist, educator, and writer based in the San Francisco Bay Area. Born in the US to immigrant parents and raised on the subtropical island of Taiwan, she is an avid observer of human behavior. Through manipulating metal, stone, and wood, she explores cultural nuance in wearable sculpture.
Shih holds a BA from Columbia University and a BFA from the California College of the Arts. Her work has been exhibited across the USA and internationally, from Japan to Canada to Malaysia, and can be seen in person at Shibumi Gallery and De Novo Gallery. In addition to teaching and running her jewelry studio, Shih is the assistant editor at Metalsmith magazine.
