Baroque Brilliance: Music for a Festive Occasion
From soaring soprano melodies to triumphant trumpet fanfares, Baroque composers knew how to make an occasion feel special. This holiday season, experience festive music filled with virtuosity, wit, and exuberance, performed on period instruments and in the style of the time, so you'll hear the music much as its first audiences did.
Philharmonia Baroque presents two exhilarating showpieces for soprano and trumpet: Handel's "Let the Bright Seraphim" and J.S. Bach's Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen. Famously performed by Dame Kiri Te Kanawa at the 1981 wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana, Handel's aria pairs soprano and trumpet in a thrilling musical dialogue, while Bach's jubilant music bursts with joy and celebration.
You'll also hear Telemann's Burlesque de Quixotte, a witty orchestral portrait of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, complete with the knight's swagger and comic misadventures. C.P.E. Bach's expressive cello concerto offers an intimate contrast, while a West Coast Premiere by Marianna Martines introduces music by an influential contemporary of Mozart and Haydn.
Guest conductor Patrick Dupre Quigley leads Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, joined by soprano Kathryn Mueller and Philharmonia musicians featured as soloists: cellist William Skeen, oboist Gonzalo X. Ruiz, and trumpeter Kathryn Adduci.
