Elderly Victim Of San Francisco Beating Identified

The man accused in the killing has been arrested.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — A 66-year-old man who died following a fight in San Francisco's Tenderloin neighborhood more than a week ago has been identified by the city's medical examiner's office as James Montgomery.

Montgomery, a San Francisco resident, died on Sept. 2 at the hospital, after a physical altercation in the 700 block of O'Farrell Street around 1:20 p.m.

According to police, 38-year-old Sylvester Guard punched Montgomery, causing Montgomery's fatal injuries. Officers immediately arrested Guard on suspicion of voluntary manslaughter, assault and elder abuse.

Guard is reportedly an artist, credited with creating murals and street art throughout the city.

Guard is being represented by the Public Defender's Office.

According to jail records, he's being held on $300,000 bail and is set to appear in court next on Sept. 27.
