SAN FRANCISCO, CA — Renown for decades as a San Francisco go-to for authentic Irish music, camaraderie and "craic," The Plough and The Stars has a cadre of supporters who are waging a fundraising campaign to ensure the pub survives COVID-19 shutdowns.

"Your donations can ensure the survival of the legendary west coast home of Irish music," organizers said on their GoFundMe effort, Support The Plough & Stars in San Francisco. "No other pub in the city has achieved the musical reputation and cultural longevity of The Plough."

The Plough, opened in 1975 at Clement Street and Second Avenue, offers a laid-back, neighborhood atmosphere, along with musical entertainment, dancing, pool, darts and, of course, beer on tap. It was placed in 2018 on the city's Legacy Business Registry — recognizing the establishment as a "valuable cultural asset."

"For 45 years, The Plough & Stars in San Francisco has been the heart of the Irish traditional music scene on the West Coast," the GoFundMe site states. "A major touring location for renowned musicians from Ireland and beyond, it has also supported local musicians with sessions and set dancing each week, as well as bluegrass and Americana music on weekends."

The fundraiser said donations will go toward building rent and employee wages, adding that the aim is a return to "a venue for musicians and dancers when the shelter-in-place order is lifted."
