SAN FRANCISCO, CA — During German Gonzalez's 47 years as a music educator, there was always one part that he loved the most: conducting.

Now retired, Gonzalez gets to do just that when the Golden Gate Park Band returns for its 144th season on Sunday. And lots of it.

Gonzalez will be at the helm during the free concert series that'll run every Sunday around 1 p.m. at Golden Gate Park through Sept. 27.

"What an honor to be part of this SF tradition since 1882, the SF Golden Gate Park Band, the Soul of the City at the historical Bandshell," Gonzalez told Patch. "It’s rewarding to be able to perform 24 unique concerts with 30 professional musicians every Sunday."

No two concerts are alike, Gonzalez says, with the band working "off of a loosely drawn template from years past" and themes to fill the 90-minute program.

This year, because there are now "thousands of band pieces and arrangements," according to Gonzalez, the band can showcase more of their flexibility, depth and technical skills.

It'll open on Sunday with a "Soul of the City Since 1882" concert, celebrating the band's legacy.

There will also be a special Juneteenth and Pride celebration concerts featuring "local legends" and dance groups, along with a "spectacular 250th year 4th of July Celebration concert."

Mark Nemoyten, a longtime band member retiring after 30 years, told Patch that he's looking forward to the special performances, including "new guest performers" they have in store.

Nemoyten is the principal/solo trumpet and cornet player. While he usually gets at least a short solo section to play during every concert, this year he'll be a feature throughout several performances.

Short rehearsal time and staying in shape aren't even the most challenging parts of performing at the series, Nemoyten said. It's actually trying to do the music "justice," he added.

And with genre-bending varieties planned for the series, and a band filled with dozens of professional musicians, that's where the "fun" is at, Nemoyten said.

"I’m proud to be part of an organization that provides such a high level of music for free to San Franciscans and visitors every week, and enjoy working with a professional cohort of other dedicated musicians," Nemoyten said. "I’m also proud of our tradition of sharing the heritage of so many different people throughout the season."
