Happening upon a metaphysical boutique focused on healing
The Scarlet Sage Herb Co. offers oodles of alternative medicine and books among many other New Age treasures
As far as metaphysical shops usually go there is one major theme such as religious items such as at the Sword and Rose in Cole Valley or simply fortune telling as the major attraction or crystals. Not at the Scarlet Sage Herb Company. Here one finds everything related to herbalism alongside the crystals, books on being a witch, essential oils, aromatherapy, even candles. What really catches one’s eye is the modern look of the place and great lighting. The ambiance is respectful, tranquil, and welcoming—to the shy or extrovert alike. My eyes were immediately caught by a book on beginner’s Chinese herbal medicine that I hope to someday evolve into learning CTM (Chinese traditional medicine) of which The City has many options for. I also discovered an herbal mix of dandelion, mallow, and Uva ursi that is used traditionally for bladder issues. Next I began speaking with the sales team that told me that the store has been around for 26 years including 6 or 7 at the current location at 1193 Valencia (cross street 23rd st) Their website is full of promotional material related to their community herbalism course alongside a healthy dose of astrology. When I was speaking with the salesperson I was told that about Essiac Tonic, an ancient time detoxification cleanse available in various forms such as capsules or tincture. I bought it for my mom that’s recovering from cancer and was heartwarmed to learn it originates from my grandmother’s Ojibwe culture. The two items cost me about $50 together and I was nearly sold on some stones to help with healing top contenders where aventurine and rose quartz, they were priced from $3 and were generally small although larger ones are available too for varying prices. Most of the products sold come in a wide selection that smaller shops usually do not have the room for. Overall I was overcome with the peaceful vibes and excellent customer service. There’s also stuff going on in the basement according to the chatter on Instagram, owner Laura Ash was not available nor did she respond to my email as of publishing time. Scarlet Sage is a brief walk from the 14-Mission Muni lines and also 24th street Mission BART station.
