Hidden pagan gem in Cole Valley

Mysterious new age shop survives pandemic

Over the years, metaphysical shops, known to cater pagan faiths have come and gone but Sword and Rose has survived since 1985. It is self-described as an occult shop, honoring "any spiritual path". They focus on those of the pagan religions such as Wicca, Druidism, Asatru, witchcraft, Thelema, and others. Here you can browse a lovely selection of magickal tools, books, candles, crystals, oils, curios, and jewellery. All the while incense burns and fills the already palpable spiritual aura of the place. It is somewhat of a local secret as you must walk through the entrance of a house through a tunnel-like foyer that leads to a garden. Beyond the garden lays a rather tiny space, however it is full of charm and often includes a witch you can talk to. The witch or other employee will guide you through the products and even offer general conversation. For more serious questions one can consult a tarot card reader for a fee. The owner Patrick Michael is the subject of a short documentary from 2014 visible on the store's website. In the film he tells the story of Sword and Rose, of the loss of his partner, and other interesting related topics. Fortunately for the occult and its followers the shop is still open with limited operating hours 12 noon - 6pm Sunday through Tuesday. According to the shop it will be everyday Noon to 6pm starting in March. It is located at 85 Carl st (along N-Judah line Carl & Cole). According to Michael a shopper once commented, "I've lived in Cole Valley for 25 years and never knew you were here!" Hopefully now the followers of the Goddess, fans of tarot readings, and others will continue to support this cute little secret in Cole Valley.
