On Friday, he signed a bill to rename UC Hastings College of the Law, which was named after Serranus Clinton Hastings. Hastings founded the campus in 1878, and committed atrocities against the Yuki Native American Tribe. The bill also renames the university’s law library, and the law school plans to read a statement detailing atrocities Hastings committed, and provide experience for tribal students to gain debate and writing experience.

Assembly Bill 1936, authored by Assemblymember James Ramos, is meant to advance "restorative justice efforts for Round Valley Indian Tribes and Yuki people whose ancestors suffered mass killings and other atrocities funded and supported by college founder Serranus Hastings in the mid-19th century."

It was one of several bills signed Friday that allow improved access to in-state tuition, ESL courses at community colleges, and further options to finance college educations.
