Macy's To Close 10 Stores Next Month. Will CA Be Included?

In addition to competition from online shopping, California stores have the added pressure of organized retail thefts.

CALIFORNIA — Macy's announced in November that it will close 10 stores nationwide in January, according to CNBC. These 10 stores were part of the 125 Macy's stores the company announced it planned to shutter by 2023; 65 have already shuttered.

Macy's closed two stores in California in 2021: Richmond and El Cajon.

The remaining California stores have the added pressure of dealing with organized retail thefts.

Macy's intended to move forward with its plans to close stores in January but may reconsider when it will shut down the remaining 60 stores on its hit list. Data showed that online sales do better in areas where there is a physical Macy's store.

"The delayed closure of certain stores allows us to maintain a physical presence in the market, which is critical to our top line growth," Macy's Chief Financial Officer Adrian Mitchell told CNBC. "Digital performance is stronger in the markets where we have stores."
