Woman Wakes Up To Man Sexually Assaulting Her Inside Tent In SF: DA

The man faces several sexual assault charges, San Francisco prosecutors said.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — A 36-year-old is accused of sexually assaulting an unconscious woman inside a tent in San Francisco's Bayview District last month, prosecutors said.

San Francisco prosecutors charged David Vonstetten Wednesday with sodomy of an unconscious person, sodomy by intoxication, sodomy by force, sexual battery by restraint, and felony false imprisonment in connection with the assault on Sept. 26.

The 21-year-old woman woke up in a tent on a hill near Bayshore Boulevard and Industrial Street as Vonstetten was sexually assaulting her, the San Francisco District Attorney's Office said. Police say the Vonstetten and the woman did not know each other before the assault.

"The woman stated that she was unconscious at the start of the assault and that she didn’t and couldn’t give consent," prosecutors said.

The woman left the tent and found a witness who helped her call police, prosecutors said.

When officers arrived, the woman told t hem Vonstetten was still in the tent above the hill, prosecutors said.

The San Francisco Police Department said an officer immediately began collecting evidence, located Vonstetten and took him into custody in connection with the sexual assault.

The woman, meanwhile, was treated in an ambulance at the scene, authorities said.

The case remains under investigation, prosecutors said. The San Francisco District Attorney's Office asks that anyone who may have more information related to the case contact police at 415-575-4444.
