Man Rescued Underwater After Falling Off Torpedo Wharf

The man was seen falling off the pier shortly after 10 a.m. while collecting cans, officials said.

SAN FRANCISCO — First responders rescued a man who fell off Torpedo Wharf in San Francisco's Presidio on Tuesday morning.

According to the San Francisco Fire Department, shortly after 10 a.m., a man was seen falling off the pier while collecting cans. Witnesses called authorities after the man appeared to be struggling to stay afloat and submerged underwater, fire officials said.

Firefighters, National Park Service officials and U.S. Coast Guard members responded to the area and found the man submerged 16 feet underwater near the pier.

The man received immediate life-saving measures and was transported to a hospital in critical condition.
