NORTHERN CALIFORNIA — The latest in a series of winter storms arrived Sunday in Northern California.

The National Weather Service warned of heavy rain, a chance of thunderstorms, possible flooding, hail and even a potential tornado as the system moves across the region.

"Chance for thunderstorms still look decent through early this evening, especially for the North Bay and the interior East Bay bordering the Sac Valley," NWS Bay Area forecasters wrote Monday. "A few stronger storms are likely, with gusty winds, hail, and perhaps a brief tornado. Continue to be weather aware today and have many ways to receive weather alerts."

A flood watch is in effect until 10 a.m. Wednesday for portions of central and northern California.

Forecasters said to expect periods of moderate to heavy rain, which could cause minor to moderate local flooding, as well as rapid rises along area rivers, streams, and creeks across the region.

"Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations," forecasters said. "Creeks and streams may rise out of their banks. Flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas."

A wind advisory is also in effect until 4 a.m. Tuesday for the Bay Area and Central Coast.

South winds are expected from 15 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph, according to the NWS. Forecasters said that the strongest winds will occur along the immediate coast and within the higher terrain.

"Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects," forecasters warned. "Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result."

Showers are expected to linger into midweek before dry conditions return, according to the NWS. Rain is then expected to return next weekend.
