With No New Contract Agreement, SF Teachers Expected To Go On Strike Monday: Report

San Francisco teachers will strike for the first time in more than 40 years, according to a news report.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — Teachers in San Francisco are expected to go on strike on Monday after failing to reach a contract agreement with district officials, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

The strike would be the first by teachers in San Francisco since 1979, where it last seven weeks as educators and district officials went back and forth over layoffs and pay raises, according to the report.

Most recently, teachers and district officials battled for about a year to get a deal done, but both sides are at a stalemate, with both sides struggling with each other's proposal, which includes talks about raises, health benefits and special education support, according to the report.

District officials are expected to meet with the teachers' union around 5 p.m. on Friday to present a new proposal before the impending strike on Monday.

"We did not come to this decision lightly," United Educators of San Francisco President Cassondra Curiel told the San Francisco Chronicle. "We want to be in our classrooms and school sites with all of our students."
