San Francisco 49ers Hire New General Manager

John Lynch replaces Trent Baalke, who was fired on New Year's day.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — Former Stanford University football player and nine-time NFL Pro Bowl selection John Lynch has been hired as the new general manager of the San Francisco 49ers, team officials announced Sunday.

The announcement was made on Twitter at 7 p.m.

Just before 8 p.m., team officials announced some details about Lynch. He was a strong safety in the NFL for 15 seasons and this year is a finalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. After retiring in 2008, Lynch joined NFL on Fox, according to team officials. He also played baseball at Stanford University.

Lynch replaces Trent Baalke who was fired New Year's Day along with head coach Chip Kelly.

Last year, the 49ers went 2-14. After the firings of Kelly and Baalke, CEO Jed York said the performance of the team did not live up to his expectations or the expectations of the 49ers fans.

Team officials have not announced the hiring of a new head coach.
