Senior Living in San Francisco
A guide on the four Continuing Care Retirement Communities in San Francisco.

Senior living in San Francisco has a lot to offer, especially for those older adults who are still living more independently. More and more older adults are moving back to the City to enjoy all the amenities the city has to offer from the infinite restaurants to its lively arts scene.
Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs or LifeCare) offer a more indpendent lifestyle for seniors and can support them to age in place. CCRCs are purpose built properties meant to care for seniors when they are more independent. San Francisco has four CCRCs: the Heritage in the Marina, the Sequoias, the Carlisle, and the San Francisco Towers. They all have multi-hundred thousand dollar buy-in fees, and have monthly care and service fees as well.
The Heritage on the Marina
Heritage on the Marina is proud to be one of San Francisco’s longest-serving retirement communities. It is a non-profit corporation owned and operated by the San Francisco Ladies’ Protection and Relief Society, one of California’s oldest philanthropic organizations, since 1853. Our land site was originally part of the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition. Following this renowned World’s Fair, a generous benefactor donated the empty block to the Ladies’ Protection and Relief Society. Julia Morgan, California’s first woman architect, designed the main building, completed in 1925. The Heritage site continues to be lovingly maintained and upgraded.
