SF Approves Nearly $2 Million Payout to Family Of Cyclist Fatally Doored By City Worker

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — San Francisco officials will pay nearly $2 million to the family of a cyclist killed when a city worker doored him in 2024.

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors approved the $1,975,000 settlement setttlement recommended by City Attorney David Chiu and Public Utilities Commission General Manager Dennis Herrera during its latest meeting on Tuesday.

A complaint filed in court following Steven Bassett's death says he was riding his bicycle northbound on Newhall Street in San Francisco when a city worker parked on the western curb opened their car door and struck him just before 9:30 a.m. on May 30, 2024.

Bassett died 12 days later from his injuries, with the complaint stating the dooring was a substantial factor in his death.

"By way of example, the negligent instruction herein included failing to ensure that every CCSF employee uses a method such as the 'Dutch Reach' to ensure that it is safe for passing cyclists before any vehicle door is opened in traffic," attorneys representing Bassett's family alleged.
