Shooting Near Pride Festivities Leaves 1 Injured; Suspect Arrested After Foot Chase

A suspect was arrested after a shooting near Pride festivities left one person injured, police said.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — A person was arrested after a shooting near Pride festivities in San Francisco on Saturday afternoon, according to police.

NBC Bay Area reports that officers were monitoring events near United Nations Plaza around 3:30 p.m. when the shooting occurred. One person, who suffered gunshot wounds, was taken to a local hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

A suspect was located nearby and taken into custody following a foot pursuit, according to the report. A responding officer was also injured during the pursuit.

The shooting came a day after officers monitoring a planned march observed individuals vandalizing property with paint near Market and 8th streets, police said. Officers also witnessed one suspect spray-painting another person.

Police said officers attempted to take the suspects into custody but were surrounded by a group of people who tried to interfere with the arrests. Three people were arrested on charges of assault and vandalism, and two others were arrested for obstructing police.

Two officers were injured during crowd control efforts and received treatment for injuries that were not considered life-threatening, authorities said.

Police said they remained committed to monitoring Pride festivities throughout the weekend and supporting the LGBTQ+ community while ensuring public safety. In a statement, officials said they support peaceful First Amendment activity but will not tolerate violence, property destruction or criminal behavior.
